SkiSpots Espace Killy
Ski Area:
With such an expansive territory, the Espace Killy offers something for everyone; from nervous novices to experienced adrenaline junkies. However, the prime attraction of the area is definitely the technical difficulty of the accessible terrain, with some of the most exhilarating lift-served off-piste in Europe. Both resorts are firmly at the vanguard of new school snowsports, actively catering for the most cutting edge innovations in the industry: the exceptional Naturides and Tignes' novel Le SPOT freeride area are perfect examples of this ethos, featuring lift-served slopes and side valleys where all descents are within the ski area and protected by the Piste Patrol, but left as ungroomed natural powder fields, where the only limits are those you set yourself.
Novices and snowsports dabblers are also well catered for, with some of the longest green-graded runs in the region, set in the high and often sunny snowbowls at the heart of the domain. A plethora of alternative activities, with a focus on Wellness holidays, and a cosmopolitan ambiance also means that the resorts are equally capable of providing a relaxing break, as much as they can a thrilling one.
The area has witnessed some of France's, and therefore the world's, seminal snowsports history: a Val d'Isère local was (at St Moritz in 1948) the first French skier to win a Winter Olympic gold medal; the French National Ski School was conceived on these slopes; and Tignes was a pioneer of the concept of the ski-in/ski-out resort. At the Winter Olympics at Grenoble in 1968 local boy Jean-Claude Killy became a national hero by bagging three gold medals, and championed the Tarentaise as an Olympic-standard region, spearheading a campaign to secure the return of the Games to Albertville in 1992, with Val d'Isère hosting the blue ribband Downhill events; this fabulous domain is now therefore named in his honour. This tradition of excellence continues today and the area is home to world-beaters such as Ingrid Jacquemod, Mathieu Bozzetto, Guerlain Chicherit and Nicolas Huet.
